10 Mobile Learning Stats You Need to See and Why

For a survey not too long ago, the E-Learning 24/7 Blog found that 69% of L&D professionals considered mobile learning to be an essential part of their ideal LMS.

Flash-forward to now, and the folks at Learnnovators have predicted that mobile learning will be “the most disruptive game changer in 2014.”

Obviously, mobile learning is a hot topic for training professionals, and has been for some time. Why? Here are 10 fascinating mobile learning stats that help tell the story.

#1. Gartner predicts the size of the mobile workforce will double or triple by 2018. (Source: Training Zone)

What it means: More mobile workers leads to more mobile learners – or at least the potential for more mobile learners. I guess we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, but you get the picture.

#2.Tablet shipments for enterprise use could reach as high as 96 million worldwide by 2016. (Source: Vertic)

What it means: More companies are biting the bullet and issuing tablets (primarily iPads) to their employees. These are intended to be used for work purposes, which naturally, would include training.

#3. By 2018, at least 70% of mobile professionals will conduct work on personal smart devices. (Source: SailPoint)

What it means: Even if companies don’t invest in mobile devices, workers will just use their own anyway (BYOD!). That includes smartphones, tablets, or whatever the next device is (smartbelts? iHats?).

#4. 70% of L&D professionals are either currently using or plan to introduce mobile learning in 2014. (Source: Towards Maturity)

What it means: That 70% have obviously seen the stats above and are preparing for the inevitable.

#5. About 65% of information searches start on a smartphones, and the majority of those searches are continued on tablets or PCs. (Source: Michaels & Associates)

What it means: People want information right when they want it (and not a moment later), and mobile presents the perfect opportunity for “just-in-time” learning.

#6. 99% of mLearners believe the mobile format and presentation enhanced their learning, and 100% say they would complete more training in a mobile format. (Source: eLearning Industry)

What it means: Those who’ve done mobile training seem to really like it. I mean 99%? Those numbers are crazy.

#7. Mobile learners study 40 minutes more each week by studying everywhere they go. (Source: Michaels & Associates)

What it means: If a worker can access learning content anywhere, they are more likely to do that – at least for 40 minutes.

#8. Learners with smartphones are twice as likely to study between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. (Source: Michaels & Associates)

What it means: Um… the early bird catches the worm I guess? Or maybe workers take public transportation in the mornings and review learning content while they commute? Yes, I like the second one better.

#9. 54.6 million people viewed video content from their mobile devices in 2012. (Source: DCD Agency)

What it means: That was just in 2012! Imaging what the number looks like now…

#10. As of 2013, 90% of tablet users and 67% of smartphone users regularly watched video content on their devices. (Source: ISG)

What it means: See above. Mobile users like watching video content. Video presentations are great eLearning tools. This one is pretty easy.
