QR Codes 101

QR ("quick response") Code or Tag is a square barcode that you can scan with your smartphone’s camera with the help of a QR Code app to immediately launch a link or URL on the mobile phone’s web browser.   Said another way, QR Codes are a simple way to connect the offline world with the online world.  This represents a huge new point of delivery for Brainshark video presentations.

Why is this important?  ...Because you want your content available when and where your audience is primed for it.

Where to put QR Codes

QR Codes can be printed and/or displayed anywhere a mobile phone user might scan the code:

  • Product packaging or signage in a store

  • Business cards and conference badges

  • Data sheets and print materials

  • Events and trade show signage

  • Traditional advertising (print/magazines, outdoor displays)

  • Online advertising (web pages, web/mobile banner ads)

Q: How many people use QR Codes?

A: More than you think.  Compete/Kantar recently completed the first full-scale research on the subject of Bar Code Scanning, which includes QR Codes.  Leigh Householder, Digital Strategist at GSW Worldwide summarized the usage trends.   Here’s a breakdown of users who have used their smartphones to scan tags or bar codes:

  • 48% of Android users

  • 39% of iPhone users

  • 14% of Blackberry users

Free Apps you can download for reading QR Codes

With a barcode scanner app installed on your phone, you can just point your phone's camera at the code to scan its contents.  A colleague of mine uses ScanLife on his Android phone, and I personally use MobileTag for my iPhone.  Both work across the major smartphone operating systems.  Have another QR scanner app that you like?  Please comment and let us know!

How to generate a QR Code for marketing, sales, or training purposes

This QR Code generator called Kaywa is free to use and allows you to generate a QR Code that points to a web page or URL, a text message, a phone number, or a ready-to-send SMS message.  In our case, simply drop in your Brainshark URL and hit “Generate.”

Kaywa allows you to:

  • Choose 4 sizes for your QR Tag (S,M,L,XL)

  • Grab the link or HTML embed code for the QR Tag

  • Right-click on the image to copy or save it to your desktop

 Final thoughts:

  • Turning a Brainshark video presentation link into a QR Code is extremely quick and easy– so start putting them everywhere!

  • Don’t want to re-print all of your collateral?  Make stickers with your new QR Codes on them.

  • Give your customers or prospects a special incentive with a QR Code–only promotion

  • QR Codes can be read off of your website or social media pages, so consider online uses as well

  • Track performance

    • Add a tracking code to your link so you can tell which views are from the QR Tag placements.  Here’s two examples you can follow:

      • /abccompany/example?tx=QRTAG_TRADESHOW123

      • /abccompany/example?tx=QRTAG_SALESCOLLATERAL

Do you plan on using QR Codes in general this year?  Have you started pointing them to Brainshark presentations or other videos yet?  Take a minute and tell us your story.
