How To: Create an Effective Facebook Landing Page for your Business

If you've determined that setting up a Facebook fan page is the right course of action for your business, I would recommend giving it a little extra sauce with an HTML landing page. An HTML landing page is a customizable, live design which covers the rest of your fan page until someone “Likes” your page. You can do a variety of things with it but here is a simple example (ours):

When new arrivals land on our fan page, they will see this display before they can reach our wall. Once they hit the Like button, the page will disappear and they will automatically be taken to our wall each time they visit the page thereafter. Note: this landing page will still be reachable by anyone (using the tabs in the left nav) even after they click “Like” so they can always be in awe of your slick design. Likewise, our wall and other parts of our page will also be accessible in the same manner before they click “Like” even though the landing page will come up first. However, you do have the option to make some material visible to fans only.

Good features to have in your lander:

  1. A Call-to-Action (click “Like”) – that’s really the whole point of this app; you want people to join your community so make the Like button conspicuous! (Good examples: Red Bull, Pepsi, AT&T)

  2. A Taste of Who you Are – get creative here. We lucked out since we’re in video presentations, so we embedded our overview. (We even got subliminal – notice how the design even looks like one of our players?) This could very well be the first touch-point for a potential customer so they need to know what you’re all about. (Good example:

  3. Utilization of the HTML – that’s right, you can create live links! Other than embedding a cool vid, be sure to take them somewhere that might be of use – more info on your company, your actual homepage, other channels, a place where they can demo something, etc. (Great example: Coca Cola)

  4. A Menu – what are you serving here? Do you give out special offers, host contest, post funny videos or office fun? Let people know what to expect once they become a part of your Facebook community.

It’s tough to do all of these things at once. You’ll find that many pages don’t since it has a way of making your lander very busy. Also, you might have already noticed that it’s the more simple designs that can go a long way. Just make sure you give the audience enough information to decide if they want to be a part of your social experience (hopefully it’s a “yes”).

I know what you’re thinking now – “Gerry, this is all great…but how do I do this?”
