Using VideoSync in Your Brainshark Presentations

Brainshark recently announced VideoSync, an exciting new feature for including video side-by-side with slides in Brainshark presentations.  Now Brainshark authors can choose to use video from subject-matter experts, conferences and other sources alongside slides to augment the impact of their presentations.

However, with great power comes great responsibility (Thanks, Spider-Man).  In the right setting, slides and video together enhance the viewing experience, increasing impact and retention; in the wrong setting, however, the combination is distracting and confusing.  Here are a few guidelines to help you determine the best opportunities to employ VideoSync in your Brainshark presentations.

When does VideoSync work best?

  • Deliver high-quality video footage of an engaging subject-matter expert speaking on his or her field of expertise, with slides that emphasize the speaker’s points through charts, graphs or other visual aids  

  • Rebroadcast keynote addresses or other conference video, showing both the speaker and the presentation slides

  • Provide highly visual simulations of real-world scenarios: Demonstrating, for example, the right and wrong way to behave in a specific sales situation, and using slides to reinforce the key messages during the video

  • Demonstrate a new product, using the video screen to show how to navigate and the slides to reinforce the main points

When is it best to avoid using VideoSync?

  • When the video (or audio) quality is poor.   Poor production quality can be distracting, and viewers may be too focused on trying to discern the content to hear the message.  Webcam recordings, for example, often deliver poor results and rarely display their subjects in the most favorable light.  If the slides tell the story effectively by themselves, perhaps that’s the best way to go.

  • When the slide content doesn’t enhance the viewing experience.   If your slides are just bullet points that repeat what the speaker just said, you should consider just using the video as a slide in the Brainshark presentation rather than employing VideoSync.

  • When the speaker doesn’t add value to the slides.  Video of subject-matter experts can add cachet to a presentation, but even the most knowledgeable expert may not have a compelling screen presence.  In these situations, you should consider whether video will enhance or detract from the viewing experience.

Finally, keep in mind that like all presentations, VideoSync content should be well thought-out and succinct in order to maintain audience engagement.  Long, meandering or poorly produced VideoSync presentations – or any video content, for that matter – are rarely engaging, so keep them brief, concise and well-produced for maximum impact.
